DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Eng.Materials Science Engineering Technical Advisor to join our team specializing in engineering for our Cummins’ business in Columbus, IN.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Problem Resolution: Leading investigations of complex material and material processing problems, understanding causal mechanisms, recommending actions, and documenting results to ensure lessons learned are adopted.

  • Method Development: Creating, managing, and improving methods for material validation, quality auditing, design validation, and problem-solving, utilizing advanced tools and techniques for higher quality decision-making.

  • Collaboration and Negotiation: Obtaining input and negotiating with Quality, Supply Chain, and Engineering functions, as well as industry peers, to deliver complex material solutions that ensure customer success.

  • Decision Making: Using your systems knowledge to make impactful decisions in material selection, innovation, qualification, and inspection, influencing product or project direction.

  • Quality Assurance: Ensuring material capability and quality requirements are clearly understood, documented, and implemented to drive product quality consistency.

  • Leadership in Ambiguity: Providing leadership in problem resolution for complex systems with significant ambiguity and global business impact.

  • Process Improvement: Leading the development and improvement of work processes and systems across functions within a global business unit or corporate area.

  • Team Coordination and Mentorship: Coordinating and directing technical project teams, managing small to mid-sized teams, and mentoring engineers, project managers, and cross-functional team members, including potential academic or industry collaboration.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Statistical and Analytical Skills: Proficiency in applying principles of statistical methods to analyze technical data, model relationships, and make data-based decisions using techniques like regression, analysis of variance, and design of experiments.

  • Technical Expertise: Strong skills in component failure analysis, material and process selection, and material characterization to identify root causes, recommend corrective actions, and ensure compliance with requirements.

  • Problem-Solving Abilities: Effective problem-solving skills to systematically analyze issues, implement robust solutions, and prevent reoccurrence, ensuring customer protection and product reliability.

  • Communication and Networking: Excellent communication skills to convey complex information clearly and build strong networks within and outside the organization, fostering collaboration and innovation.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required. Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

  • Prior Technical Specialist/Specialist Engineering equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving, quality decision making and providing technical direction and leadership to a project team(s). Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Experience of Welding Codes - Interprets the codes in the welding industry by using the right code within an operation in a design for technical or manufacturing to be compliant with industry regulations.

  • Experience of Welding Processes - Demonstrates experience of the multiple welding processes used within the organization by properly designing for the appropriate manufacturing process to produce process robustness for quality and cost effectiveness.

  • Experience of Welding Automation - Identifies the proper types of automated welding processes to be used by integrating them into the design, and process control in the manufacturing of a part or component to ensure quality into the process.

  • Welding definition - Experience in defining welded joint requirements and design of experiment (DoE) plans to develop the welding parameters.

  • Drawing Interpretation - Integrates product design and manufacturing equipment engineering drawings to support the design and development of an optimal manufacturing process that meets product design specifications.
