Cummins Inc. Electronic Control Module Engineer - Hardware in Columbus, Indiana

DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Electronic Control Module Engineer to join our team specializing in Hardware for our Cummins Inc. facility in Columbus, IN.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Problem Investigation and Resolution : Investigate electronic hardware issues, understand their causes, recommend actions, and document results to ensure consistent operation.

  • Process Improvement : Apply and enhance electronic hardware development processes and tools, including problem-solving techniques and requirements analysis.

  • Design Methods Application : Utilize design methods such as worst-case analysis, circuit simulation, DFMEA/PFMEA, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and schematic capture to ensure robust designs.

  • Supplier Collaboration : Collaborate with electronic suppliers to deliver prototype hardware to application engineering teams.

  • Decision Making : Make informed decisions regarding hardware requirements, design, and validation tests that impact unit cost, functionality, and prototype delivery.

  • Leadership and Mentorship : Provide independent leadership on smaller projects or complex components, and review the work of less-experienced developers to ensure robust and efficient designs.

  • Work Process Development : Lead the development and improvement of work processes and systems within your functional discipline area.

  • Team Coordination and Knowledge Transfer : Coordinate and direct work among technicians and temporary student employees, and assist in transferring knowledge to less experienced engineers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role, you will need the following:

  • Design and Application of Mechatronics Systems : Specify and apply electronic hardware and interconnections to measure and control systems within Cummins' products.

  • Electrical and Mechanical Design : Create and specify components for electronic controllers and electrical systems, ensuring designs meet both Cummins' and customer expectations.

  • Product Failure Mode Avoidance : Identify and mitigate potential product failure modes to improve the reliability of Cummins' products.

  • Product Function Modeling and Analysis : Utilize computational tools and methods to predict and impact product design decisions.

  • Product Problem Solving : Implement robust, data-based solutions to solve product problems, protect customers, and prevent reoccurrence.

  • Product Verification and Validation Management : Develop validation plans, manage product risk, and verify product capabilities through analytical, simulation, and physical tests.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.

Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience:

Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred

QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Information:

  • Role Expectations: This position will require the selected candidate to report on-site 40-60% of the time each week. This could vary week to week.

  • Experience : Prior experience as a Senior or Lead Engineer in a relevant discipline is required, with a proven track record in technical problem-solving and quality decision-making. Proficiency in MS Office tools is preferred.

  • Responsibilities :

  • Act as the 3-step owner for ECM hardware diagnostics, including completing required testing and conducting E, D, and L phase reviews.

  • Support other ECU or electronic hardware integration issues related to customers, test vehicles, or test cells.

  • Review load specifications and operations to ensure compatibility with assigned ECU channels.

  • Skills :

  • Develop and maintain an understanding of how ECU ASICs and inputs function.

  • Understand hardware diagnostic concepts and limitations.

  • Recognize typical hardware failure modes and how they are addressed or mitigated.
